Spiritual Direction has existed for hundreds of years. It is sometimes called Anam Cara, or “Soul friends.” It is someone who accompanies another into the Mystery we call God or the Divine.

 

As we move through life, we encounter many thresholds. Each has its own possibilities and opportunities to engage with God, our neighbors, and to encounter our deeper selves. It is the willingness to cross the threshold from our current life to become more alive, more aware, and to catch glimpses of meaning, purpose, and contentment.

 

A Spiritual Director is not actually a director at all. The Holy Spirit is the true Spiritual Director who uses the facilitator to listen deeply, ask questions, and draw out insights from the Directee, to awaken their spiritual eyes to see what is waiting to be discovered.

 

A Spiritual Director is not a therapist who helps heal past trauma. A Spiritual Director is not a Life Coach, who helps guide in a professional arena. A Spiritual Director is a partner who journeys with you to facilitate spiritual transformation and wholeness. It is a relationship based on mutuality and equanimity, without judgement or diagnosis. They are a holy listener who offers a safe space. One who walks with you to offer reflection and courage to trust the promise of that threshold opening in your soul.
